da lvbet: Jonathan Moss is one of the Premier League’s least popular referees, and that’s probably because there’s a consistent strictness to his decision-making. Indeed, the 47-year-old ranks in the top seven from the 19 referees to work in the top flight this season for fouls per game, fouls per tackle, penalties per game and yellow cards per game.
da bwin: That’s something Tottenham must bear in mind this weekend when they travel to Anfield to take on Liverpool, with Moss appointed for Sunday’s 4.30pm kickoff.
While the Lilywhites have averaged just 1.2 fouls per match more than the Reds this season, they’ve committed the third-most per game of any Premier League side on the road with 12.5, and that appears to a consequence of the way in which they look to press opposition defences in away games. In contrast, Liverpool have committed the sixth-fewest per game at home.
Inevitably, Spurs appear more likely to be hindered by Moss’ disciplinarian streak this weekend in a big boost for Liverpool. Although Liverpool no longer boast the free kick prowess of Philippe Coutinho, conceding too many fouls in dangerous areas will eventually cost Spurs dearly, while unnecessary ones will cheaply squander any territory they gain.
At the same time, Tottenham are one of just three Premier League sides yet to concede a penalty this season – but that creates the feeling, especially with Moss in charge, that they may well be due one this weekend.
But it’s certainly not all doom and gloom for Tottenham as far as Moss’ statistical returns are concerned. Incredibly, just 28% of the matches he’s officiated this season have ended in home wins, a percentage only worsened by Martin Atkinson.
Draws have proved his likeliest result this term at 39% and bearing in mind Tottenham’s modest record at Anfield, coming back to north London with a point would certainly constitute a positive result.
