Arsenal are doing well so far under their new boss Unai Emery, and have lost just twice this season as well as embarking on an 11-game winning streak – it should be noted that their defeats were against Manchester City and Chelsea. However, they still feel a world away from the Cityzens, Liverpool and their London neighbours.
What’s the word, then?
Well, in Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette, the Gunners have two of the best strikers in the Premier League. The former has nine goals already this season, whilst the latter sits on six.
However, away from the top end of the pitch, the north Londoners don’t really possess players of the aforementioned’s ilk in any other department. Lucas Torreira looks an outstanding prospect at just 22 years of age and one would suggest he will reach the desired, world-class levels in years to come – aside from him and Mesut Ozil though, everyone else is a good player, but not quite good enough.
Additionally, it has also been a while since Arsenal made a signing that had fans up on their feet in excitement, in the fashion that had almost everyone associated with the club crammed behind Sky Sports’ cameras when £42m man Ozil arrived on deadline day.
You could argue that Aubameyang and Lacazette were marquee signings, and they were. However, they both arrived at a time where fans were convinced that Arsene Wenger was the problem, and that no signing could solve the club’s issues.
So, who could make the difference?
Ousmane Dembele. Plain and simple. There is optimism around the Emirates that this is the start of a successful new era under the Spanish coach, and that they are just one or two world-class players away from seriously competing with the big boys at the top.

The French forward is a world class talent, most certainly. His arrival in north London at a club where he already has a few friends, such as Aubameyang, has the feeling of an instant success story around it. It is in the wide areas where Arsenal are perhaps the most mediocre; Alex Iwobi simply isn’t good enough with his end product, whereas Henrikh Mkhitaryan is frustrating to say the least.
When Reiss Nelson returns from his loan spell at Hoffenheim, Emery could immediately have the best wide options in the league if he pursues the Barcelona winger seriously – the chances are looking good, especially with the Catalan-based club reportedly growing tired of the 21-year-old’s antics.
