da luck: As reported by O Jogo (via Sport Witness), Crystal Palace were amongst a number of teams who sent scouts to watch Porto’s win over Vitoria on Sunday.
Manchester United, Liverpool, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid also sent officials to watch the game, as Porto managed to record a 3-0 win thanks to a double from Moussa Marega and a goal from 32-year-old defender Ivan Marcano.
It is unknown to us who the Eagles and others were keeping tabs on, although here are two players who we think the south Londoners should’ve been watching closely…
Jesús Manuel Corona
Known simply as ‘Corona’ – yes, like the beer – the right-back delivered a superb performance against Vitoria.
Palace are in need of another right-back having sold Aaron Wan-Bissaka to Manchester United this summer, leaving them with just Joel Ward as their only recognised senior option in that position.
Corona managed to make three key passes – with one of them earning him an assist – whilst he also completed three dribbles and won three aerial duels in what was a solid performance.
The Eagles would’ve been foolish not to have made a note of his fine showing.
Moussa Marega
A more recognised name in the Porto squad, but nevertheless, a player who would vastly improve the Eagles.
Scoring goals has been Palace’s problem for a while now, with Jordan Ayew, Christian Benteke and Connor Wickham netting just two league goals between them last term.
Marega scored twice against Vitoria, finding the target with all five of his shots taken, whilst also completing two dribbles – he earned the WhoScored Man of the Match award with a rating of 9.29.
The Mali international is a bullish, pacey forward who can lead the line admirably, but one who also knows where the back of the net is – he seems tailor made for Palace’s counter-attacking style of play.
