BBC Sport journalist David Ornstein has said on Twitter that Crystal Palace are only paying £3m to bring Everton midfielder James McCarthy to Selhurst Park, in what is a surprise update given other contrasting reports.
What’s the word, then?
Well, the Eagles have been linked with a move for the Republic of Ireland international throughout the summer, but it appears as though they are finally going to get a deal over the line for him before Thursday’s deadline.
A report in The Daily Mail earlier this month suggested that the south London outfit had offered £8m for a player valued at £10m by the Merseyside outfit, and the same publication said on Tuesday that an £8m deal had been agreed between the two Premier League clubs.
However, Ornstein has disagreed with that – and another report by Sky Sports – by saying the deal is actually worth £3m. Whether that is simply the upfront fee with further add-ons included is unclear.
A smart deal
Just like the addition of Jordan Ayew for £2.5m earlier this summer, Palace can’t really go wrong if they are paying £3m for an experienced top flight player in McCarthy.

The 28-year-old may have had his fair share of injury issues in recent years, but he is still an individual who knows this level well and will have a point to prove that he can still make a big impact as a Premier League player.
The Glasgow-born star averaged 2.7 tackles and 1.8 interceptions per game, according to WhoScored, the last time he was a regular in the Everton side in 2015/16, and if he can reproduce those sorts of numbers for the Eagles this term he could prove to be a bargain buy – if Ornstein’s information is correct, that is.
