[ad_pod ]We all know what Graeme Souness is like as a pundit. The former Liverpool midfielder is similar to what he was like as a player in the studio; hard hitting, speaks his mind and takes no nonsense. However, nonsense is how we’re going to describe his latest comments on why Tottenham ‘don’t deserve’ to be in the Champions League final.Has Alisson been Liverpool’s most important signing of the season? Check out the video below to find out why Jurgen Klopp thinks so…
What did he say?
Souness told Balls.ie: “Spurs shouldn’t be there. You say to anyone at the start of the season that this team’s gonna lose 19 games in all competitions and yet they’ll find themselves in the final of the Champions League, they’d say you’re talking nonsense.
“But they’ve somehow got themselves there and I’d say they’re fortunate.”
The stats that make him sound foolish
Souness is an avid Liverpool supporter, and that definitely comes across in his comments.
Liverpool fans won’t want to hear this, but their former midfield destroyer isn’t making much sense.
Back in 2005, when the Reds beat AC Milan on penalties after being 3-0 down to win the Champions League in Istanbul, Liverpool’s domestic season went far worse than the Tottenham one that Souness was referring to.
Liverpool also lost 19 games in all competitions in the 2004/05 campaign, but didn’t even manage to finish in the top four like Spurs did this term – they also finished below Everton and level on points with Bolton.
The Champions League, contradictory to its declaration as a league, is a cup competition where anything can happen.
Tottenham managed to qualify for it, and they have made it all the way to the final thanks to an unbelievable amount of desire, resilience and passion; your exploits domestically don’t have any correlation to your European campaign.
We can’t say for certain, but we’re pretty sure that if it was Liverpool who had finished fourth this season and lost 19 games in all competitions, Souness wouldn’t be saying the same thing.
