da casino: There haven’t been many problems since Steve Bruce first arrived at Sheffield Wednesday. The defence has been a main area of strength but over the last few games, particularly after the loss of Rolando Aarons, there has been a lack of creativity.
His injury and Steven Fletcher’s groin issue had made things difficult, but on Tuesday night Bruce overcame his last remaining problem in remarkable fashion.
Matias comes up trumps
Bruce’s team selection against Forest was surprising. It was a gamble too, making changes which saw Adam Reach shift from the right of midfield into a more central role.
Taking his place on the wing was Marco Matias, starting his first game under the new regime which raised further eyebrows amongst the Hillsborough faithful.
Aarons’ loss was significant when he hobbled out of the warm-up against Stoke a few weeks ago and George Boyd didn’t exactly perform well in his place.
Yet, his performance was key on Tuesday night and so was Matias’, as Bruce’s decision to play the pair of them worked an absolute treat.
The latter scored twice, whilst also playing two key passes during the win. It was a display that almost makes him a certainty to start at the weekend.
Bruce could have stuck with Reach on the right and possibly even played Fernando Forestieri on the left. But his selection gamble paid off and only moved him higher up in the supporters’ estimations.
The 58-year-old has done a phenomenal job since he arrived and a 3-0 win over a team also bidding for a play-off spot demonstrates just how far the Owls have come in the space of a couple of months.
If there were any lingering doubts over this Wednesday team, they were swatted away with some aplomb.
Matias’ contract expires in the summer but after his most recent showing, may now be on course to save his career at the Yorkshire club.
